The Artificer in Pathfinder is in a third party supplement, and each handles things a little bit differently. I'll have to see if I still have the pathfinder version for comparison, but it may have died with the HDD. (I don't recall what I got backed-up before the crash).

So, I'm reading through this magic system, and I really like it. Should I just build a mage that focuses on healing, or choose a more traditional class and just use this method for casting spells?

Well, we have a tie, of sorts.

1 Vote for standard 4d6, drop low with an 'interesting' vote for 2d6+6

1 vote for 65 points or 2d6+6

1 vote just for 65 points

So thats 2 for 65 points, and 2 for 2d6+6 (sort of, more like 1.5 votes)

I have my preferences, but I would just be being an ass if I voted for the 2d6+6 option, especially on a technicality. So 65 points it is.

Now that that is out of the way, we can work on other aspects.

Pyroth, Your choice. Which would you rather play? I really look forward to giving the d20WoD a good run-through.

Alright, could you be a bit more specific on the point buy system. It's 65pts at a 1 to 1 ratio, but where do that attributes start?

Since it looks like Pyroth is going for the group healer, I'll plan on taking the rogue spot. So, how about the Assassin class from The Assassin Handbook (Green Ronin)? The class gains casting at 4th lvl and I'd like to stick with the nWoD style, so how would you do the 'mana' points?

Probably do a healing mage. It sounds a lot less complicated, not to mention very interesting. I'm going to have a lot of reference material for when I play. I'll see if I can't memorize a lot of it to cut down on time.

Stats start at 0, you have 70* points to spend on them. You have to put at least 6 in each stat, and no more than 18, before racial mods.

i.e., if you want to put a 12 in strength, that costs you 12 points, leaving 58 for the other stats.

*I came to realize last night that 65 just wouldn't give us much wiggle room.

Zalun, I'm reading the Assassin right now, and the description of the class has me worried. Do you plan on playing the character the book suggests? It just doesn't sound like he'd fit into an adventuring group well.

Tell me what your intent is with the character, and I'll start working on a list of changes that we'll need to bring it into line.

Just a reminder for anyone not completely familiar with Pathfinder rules.
(You can refer to the Pathfinder SRD.)

You do not get the same number of skill points at start (no x4 multiplier).
Further, you are limited to a maximum number of ranks per skill equal to your hit dice (instead of level +3).
Class and cross-class skills work differently. You can put ranks in any skill at a 1 to 1 rate. If you have ranks in a class skill, you get a +3 bonus to that skill.

The list has changed, so look for the changes. Examples: Hide and Move Silently are now Stealth. Spot, Listen, Search are all Perception.

Instead of buying ranks in Speak language, with each language being another skill rank, you get one or two languages at start (usually comman and your racial language), then a number of extra languages equal to your intelligence bonus.

The next step will be to nail down the campaign setting and gaming style.

My suggested setting didn't get a totally overwhelming response, so I'll open the floor to preferences? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

And do we want a lot of hack and slash, or a lot of dungeon crawling, or a lot of puzzles...or are you going to make me write a grand story arc with dozens of characters? :) Adventure modules you've always wanted to explore?

I've played a few assassin characters before. He will be a True Neutral, very quiet and solitary, changling. His back story would be something along the lines of he was a street tough who made a career out of the only thing he was good at, killing. To him killing is a business, a way to make a living. He is willing to kill anyone for the right price, but he is not bloodthirsty. He holds himself to his own code of honor, No one dies with out necessity or payment, Slaughter is for the uncivilized. He's slow to anger and quick to disappear.

I don't intend on playing him as the book suggests. He probably wouldn't fit in well with a strictly Good aligned group, nor would he fit in with an Evil group. He looks out for himself and only kills, for free, when he is forced to.

Ouch you must not like point buy systems. 70pts 1 to 1 with attributes starting at 0. Even the standard DMG pt buy is nicer than that.
