Post Re: Is OpenRPG dead?
I think you miss the point... while I do appreciate your offer of help, I do not want to install Traipse at this time, my OpenRPG works perfectly well.

I tried Traipse in the past, twice, and did not care for it. I am believe you when you say a lot of its problems are fixed, I just am not generous enough to give it a third shot right now.

As for being alone, the ARC server had 84 people yesterday, compared to 16 on Traipse.

My problem with Traipse is that it is splitting an already too small community in half. It is not up to me to say how people should spend their time, that is up to them, but I do not want to spend my time on new software that excludes half the population of OpenRPG gamers.

That is why I am hoping that there will be some games on an OpenRPG server, nothing against Traipse, I just don't want it for me, you can have it for you, I am NOT the one trying to get everyone to switch to it.

Post Re: Is OpenRPG dead?
To some degree I do think OpenRPG is on its way to its death unfortunately. A gaming community is only as strong as the population that makes it up. In recent years with a lack of development and competing with Maptool, OpenRPG has suffered. The latest and probably greatest setback to OpenRPG is the apparent loss of www.openrpg.com. In online gaming, people come and go. Some stay but some try it and leave. The constant influx of new people is needed to keep things going and without a website to find OpenRPG or games maintaining a healthy and thriving gaming community becomes a challenge. For instance who will find these boards now that they are not linked to openrpg.com? Its not impossible to find them but its not nearly as simple.

Mayhem Gaming recently opened the forums for anyone to recruit on to hopefully help fill any lost need the openrpg community has for being able to recruit for games.

Traipse/Pious Paladin is the only branch of OpenRPG that is active. Things aren't perfect but they are moving forward. I will continue to support Traipse/Pious Paladin as well as to do what I can to offer options to those who are still using OpenRPG as well. Athos is correct that the development of Traipse/Pious Paladin is splitting a small community. Things are changing as they so often do and I sincerely hope everyone in the community stays along for the ride.

Post Re: Is OpenRPG dead?
Years ago, before I found OpenRPG I was on WebRPG, then it went "pay" only and I left and found OpenRPG. I loved the community and the original support that it had. I even considered joining the development team, but never really fully committed to it. I have made some nodes/character sheets though which I've shared with folks in my games and put them up on the OpenDev II support site that was up back in the day. I have run 2 decades of games on OpenRPG and some on Traipise in the last 2 yrs. I have both installed on my desktop.

I am sorry to see the domain go down and wonder if anyone will consider putting it back up? I'm guessing Chris isn't bothering anymore since he' s busy with his RPGObjects site.

Of course now there is more competition for Open/Traipise with Maptools and other virtual game software being offered, some if not all of which have support/development because they're a paid service, but that is probably where the ones who got disgrunted with Open/Traipise went too, or they've gone onto other things.

I've also been doing more tabletop gaming or gaming at my local game store when my free time permits. Also been trying out things like the new SWToR MMO.

Speaking of gaming, I'm considering a SWToR era Star Wars RPG and might run it on the 1.8 server or another if desired.

Why are people talking like maptool is new? OpenRPG has coexisted with it for years.

I think the recent problems have been that fewer people are using this board, and in fact any board, to advertise their games. Believe it or not, finding maptool games besides dnd is more difficult than openrpg games.

I think this started with VEAV going down. For some reason, when that server was up, people used these boards way more. And before that, when these boards were on the previous server, there was a greater variety of games.

What I've seen lately is a community that is less active off of openrpg, and therefore more difficult to contact, and fewer choices in the systems being run. I also think that the trend of persistent world games has contributed to less presence on the web, since people just hang out in their rooms and wait for people to come in, as well as creating a less reliable community. I don't know if the players who now claim they don't have time to schedule games are new players or if they were taken from the community of scheduled-game players, but if it's the latter, then I consider that a huge loss to the hobby.

Well, there is an ARC board... I just applied to it last week, but I don't think it is very active, since I haven't heard anything and my status still shows validating.

You are right, this forum isn't used that much any more, which is a shame, it used to be a pretty central place to go and find games.

I only tried maptools once, and wasn't impressed with it... it was years ago, and it may have changed since then, but is it experiencing a big regrowth or something? I just want to game and I don't care if I have to install another product as long as it doesn't try and hose the ones I currently have installed.

I am hoping to recruit some more people from the Palladium forums to come and game on OpenRPG, maybe we can get some new people involved and get the community back to the size it was a few years back. Or at least here's hoping.

Whatever did happen to VEAV? I remember it from years ago. This is my first use of OpenRPG since...five, maybe six or more years ago? What has happened in all this time?

A little FYI - I dared to venture into the "Adult" server to see what I'd find....and it's actually a pleasant surprise. Plenty of people hosting various games and restrictions on adult content. It's not what the name might imply to some. It's probably ideal for hosting games (such as the one I am recruiting for).

Good to hear.

I stopped by yesterday and was pleasantly surprised as well...

I am glad it wasn't what I was expecting; when an I saw the term "adult", being the internet, I read that as teenagers posing as grownups, with porn everywhere, and a lawsuit waiting to happen, which generally scares the hell out of me. But the sign said 18 and up only, so we shall see. And I didn't see anything inappropriate going on so it must have admins or something to keep order.

To answer the question regarding Veav, it was one of the first big servers to spontaneously vanish. No, not the only one (and DevII seems to have vanished, within the past few days.) They simply cease to exist, and the player base moves to other servers.

I saw Dev II up twice yesterday, so you might try back.

Veav and Blackstar were both pretty popular and just vanished. I don't know if the host got tired of paying for the extra computer and internet or what.

I know it is a cost to run a server and a lot of ISP won't let you unless you pay more...

So here is a big Thanks, to all those that do run servers, we appreciate you,
