Post Gauging Interest: Wednesday Night DnD/Pathfinders
I'm looking at running a DnD/Pathfinders game on Wednesday evenings (EST/-5 GMT). I'm probably looking at starting sometime in mid September.

A few probable characteristics of the game:

A. Style:
1. Plot-driven
2. Players write some sort of journal/interaction/backstory between sessions to help promote character
development (for bonus exp of course)
3. Role-play heavy (combat expected to be role-played, not roll-played)
4. Character creation integrated into first session
B. Setting:
1. Homebrew world, possible alternate history Germany circa 750 CE
2. Low fantasy/magic is rare/might not even 'actually exist' until the plot begins to unfold
3. Travel/Adventure/Exploration theme
C. Mechanics
1. Bell-curved dice (3d6 instead of 1d20)
2. All dice rolls by players (monsters set attack number, players roll for defense, etc)
3. Possible additional dice-compression for critical hits and damage to make combat flow faster and more smoothly (going to mathcraft it out and see if there's a more efficient way)
4. Likely injury system for PCs instead of hit point system

Respond in this thread or PM me if:
1. You are interested in all of the above
2. You are interested in the themes but can't make the timeslot
3. You are interested in the timeslot, but don't like the themes

Thanks,

TheVoices

I like the style and setting, and I would like to play. I don't much like the idea of using the bell curve roll, but that is probably just because I'm so used to the idea of d20 being, well, d20. I very much dislike the idea of the static monster attack, but I have never tried it out and I am willing to.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "combat expected to be role-played, not roll-played". Could you elaborate?

If it matters, I prefer pathfinder as a system.

tl;dr, Sign me up.

Static monster attack would mean that instead of an enemy rolling 1d20+1 to attempt to hit your AC of 15, you roll 1d20+5 to attempt to block a monster attack DC of 11. The idea behind that is to removed the DM as a dice-bottleneck; when there's 4-6 players make them do the rolling and let the DM run the game. That is very much open for change, I just think it would make the game run more smoothly.

As far as the combat thing goes, I've often seen combat degenerate into a game of yahtzee. I expect players to remain engaged in descriptive role-playing during combat sequences.

As far as the bell-curved dice goes, again that's open for change if we don't like the way it works out after a few sessions.

Well, I can see how it would free up the DM for more important things.

Ahhh, I get it. As a small-time DM myself, I get pretty frustrated when combat starts to go that way.

Well, shoot me a pm or update this post if you get the game together, I am very interested in playing.

Thanks for the interest. If/when we can gather a few more folks we'll see if we can meet up and get going.
