Post 2nd edition AD&D, Friday nights (1 to 5 openings)
I ran this game on OpenRPG for a little over four months in 2010, then went on an extended break.

This game goes from 9:30 pm to 1 am EST on Friday nights. It takes place in a home-brew campaign setting. We use 2nd edition AD&D rules. Right now, I have a roster of three definites and three possible players. In an ideal situation, all of the possibles can commit but I know that's not going to happen. Therefore, I'm recruiting anywhere from one to five players.

Currently the roster consists of the following: 2nd level human wilder, 2nd level dwarven fighter/cleric, 2nd level halfling wizard*, 2nd level human paladin*, two unknowns and two NPCs (see below).

The players playing the halfling wizard and the human paladin aren't sure if they can re-commit to this game, so I have to be ready for the possibility that they can't. Although we use 2nd edition AD&D rules, it's not a strict by-the-book game as wizards aren't a 2nd edition legal class for halflings. Wilders are a variant of the wizard class (i.e., Wise Ones, Aes Sedai, asha'man), using a hybrid mix of rules from 2nd edition AD&D and the d20 Wheel of Time book.

Looking at the roster (and with full knowledge of the adventure that I'm using), having a couple of fighters is important. If the player playing the paladin PC decides to opt out, having a paladin with the group will also be of paramount importance. A thief character is desirable. Currently this position is filled by Furnok the Fabulous, NPC halfling thief extraordinaire. But if someone wants to roll one up, Furney won't mind sharing the spotlight as long as he gets to add to his collection. :) There's only one cleric in the group. If that player is unavailable for a session, someone else can run him in a pinch. I don't play NPCs solely to fill holes in the group. Having another cleric or druid might not be such a bad idea after all. The group is heavy with magic-users, counting the NPC wizard, Spugnoir. No more mages, please.

Because one of the unknowns isn't available on Friday evenings until the middle of April, the first session won't be until April 29, 2011.

Sheets can be in .doc, .rtf or .html format but I prefer the .xml node that's common on OpenRPG. That way I have easy access to your character and I can just upload it to my game tree.

If you're interested, e-mail me at SobaAddict70 at gmail dot com. Please put "2nd edition AD&D Friday game" in the subject line so I don't treat it as spam.

If you have questions, please reply to this thread so that everyone can see them.

I'll post the campaign background that's occurred so far in the post below. Although there's some prior history, it's not been so long in the making that new players will feel like they're lost and have a lot of catching up to do.

Thanks for reading and may peace be your sword.

Long ago, in the Valley of Vos, an evil demoness founded a cult dedicated to exploring evil in its most elemental forms. This cult was based in a temple just outside the village of Annoras in a vile shire known as Nulb. Soon, this cult ruled the region with tyranny; times of chaos and violence ensued. Hard-fought battles were waged and the war was eventually won by warriors led by the paladins of Bastion. The temple was razed, the villains were imprisoned, and order was restored. The Temple itself faded into distant memory ... until now.

Recently, bandits have begun patrolling the roads outside Annoras and wicked forces are rumored to be afoot, converging on the ruined temple at Nulb. Their purposes for such meetings are as yet unknown. The identity of these people are equally a mystery. Some claim they are bent on slaying monsters and maintaining order within the region, but no one can be sure.

And so begins your adventure in the valley of Vos, an adventure that may take you far beyond a simple country village into the halls of the unexplored and the reaches of the unknown ...

What has gone before:

They approached the village of Vos, having ridden up from the lands of the Gold Coast. They were poorly mounted, badly equipped and had no large sums of cash. In fact, all they had is what they wore and what they rode, plus the few coins that were hidden in purses and pockets. What they possessed in quantity though, was daring and desire to become wealthy and famous. Thus they came to Annoras to learn. Is this indeed a place for adventurers to seek their fortunes? They all hoped, of course, to gain riches and make names for themselves. The outcome is uncertain, but their skill and daring, along with a good measure of luck, will be the ingredients of what follows. For as the saying goes, there is no Fate but the Fate you have made.

Having heard of a newly resurgent Temple, several adventurers journeyed overland to the village of Vos where they learned of the area's troubled history, as well as the hopes and dreams of the villagers. They've also attracted the notice of a few curiosity-seekers as well. Furnok, styled "the Fabulous", a halfling rogue with a penchant for loaded dice and buxom wenches, has attached himself to the party. There's also Spugnoir, a down-on-his-luck wizard who isn't sure he has the skills to call himself magus, much less the fortitude to become an adventurer. Nevertheless, he's experienced his first real fights, most recently against a group of bandits and afterwards, a menacing ogress.

The group came upon a ruined moathouse, explored its interior and the dungeons below and in so doing, seem to have attracted the notice of the dungeon's denizens ...

As the post says, all characters are currently 2nd level. There are two unknowns (but those will be 2nd level too).

What do you mean by "creative"? Can you provide me with an example?

This is the list of allowed books:

Quote:

* 2nd edition AD&D PH
* 2nd edition AD&D Tome of Magic
* 1st edition AD&D Unearthed Arcana
* Player's Option: Skills and Powers (NWP rules only)
* The Complete Fighter's Handbook
* The Complete Wizard's Handbook
* The Complete Priest's Handbook
* The Complete Thieves' Handbook
* The Complete Bard's Handbook
* The Complete Druid's Handbook
* The Complete Paladin's Handbook
* The Complete Ranger's Handbook
* The Complete Book of Elves
* The Complete Book of Dwarves
* The Complete Book of Gnomes and Halflings
* The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook
* Celts Campaign Sourcebook
* Charlemagne's Paladins Campaign Sourcebook
* The Glory of Rome Campaign Sourcebook
* Vikings Campaign Sourcebook
* Arms and Equipment Guide
* d20 Wheel of Time sourcebook (for channeler PCs only)

Of that list, only the PH and the TOM are required (the d20 WOT book is required ONLY if you're playing an Aes Sedai, asha'man or wilder); all else are optional.

As in creative backgrounds, such as a Warrior who seeks to destroy the government because he beleives it is corrupt, or other ideas in simlar ways, and, I don't have ANY of those books, is there a way I can get them online? I know the rules by heart, but I just sold my ADND books to pay the bill, so, I don't have any of them Dx<

Yes, creative character backgrounds are allowed.

As for the books, I'm sure you can obtain them via Amazon.

Some more questions that someone raised via e-mail, just as an FYI.

Still recruiting for this game. As of now, it seems I have four definites, although that number can potentially change. Accordingly, I'm recruiting for anywhere from 1 to 4 players.

============

Would it be possible to use another system other than OpenRPG? Such as Skype maybe. And, I was wondering if you were willing to bend rules for character ideas, I plan to run a Fighter, but I want to be more than a fighter, I wanted to be a swords specialist, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to bend a few rules such as allow me to stabalize the instant I hit -0 HP, but not -10 HP. And so on.

It has to be OpenRPG.

It cannot be Skype because (1) not everyone in the group has a headset; (2) not everyone in the group is comfortable using a headset or a voice program over the Internet; and (3) most important of all, the text logs are saved because portions are used in future storylines.

We only use weapon specialization rules in the PH and the Complete Fighter's Handbook. Other items are on a case-by-case basis. We do use the optional "death's door" rule (a strict 2E game using RAW (rules as written) states that death results at 0 for example); in my game, death results at -11 or lower. So I'm not really clear on what you're asking here.

I'm going to cut and paste your questions on the OpenRPG recruit thread, if you don't mind.

That's fine, and, I wasn't talking about using a headset, Skype has a chat system, it's just well known for it's crystal clear calling, aaaaaand, the chat log is saved on Skype, I was asking because OpenRPG suddenly stopped working for me for some reason. And I want to play.

I don't think you understand.

Not everyone in the group has the time or inclination to learn an entirely new program when the current program fits their needs. I've done internal polling on this issue in the past. Some people in our playgroup are fine with Skype and Ventrilo; a few are not. In this case, minority wins out. Recruiting is difficult enough, especially since we are playing with an older edition of the game, so OpenRPG it will have to be. Sorry.

You might be able to get around the functionality issue by installing Traipse. It has settled my program issues with Open, and things work fine now. Traipse can be accessed here: http://www.rpgobjects.com/index.php?c=orpg&m=getorpg_t

Hmmm, not much to learn about it, but ok.

I've broached the issue of voice chat instead of typing before and people have expressed their concerns to me.

If I push for Skype, I can tell you one thing that will happen. I will lose a couple of long-time, dedicated players which is precisely the opposite effect I'm looking for. I'm not willing to do that just for a new player.

The best thing I can advise you is, if you want to know more about how we play, is to lurk for a session during one of our Saturday games. It's a different campaign set in the same world. A couple of players in the Saturday game are also in the Friday playgroup. The schedule for that game runs from 9 pm to 3 am on Saturday evenings, in the "Damrosil" room on Mayhem or Blackstar.

If at the end of the day, the use of OpenRPG only over OpenRPG and Skype is a deal-breaker, then there's not much I can do for you because we're not going to be using Skype or any other kind of voice chat for the foreseeable future.
