Post subject:  Blank Browse Servers Dialog box

One of my players is having the problem where, when he opens the Browse Server, the dialog box is completely blank. He is running Vista, he used the Vista/7 installer and I have had him uninstall Python, wxPython and OpenRPG and reinstall. Any suggestions ?

What version are you using?

1.8.0, he used the Vista/7 installer downloaded straight from here less than 2 weeks ago. I will have him run system_check.py and I will post openrpg_sysinfo.txt when he sends it to me.

I meant, Standard or Traipse?

Standard. I am trying to keep everyone in my group in sync and on the same version. I am not opposed to trying Traipse, but frankly it took us 6 months to decide to move to 1.8.0.

Well both have identical code on that dialog don't they prof.erbal?

By "blank" you mean that all the bits show up but there's nothing in the list? Not that the window itself is blank of all internal details / controls?

If it is a blank list then they can't reach the metaserver. They should be able to enter the IP of the server you use manually. Does that work? If they ever got it working once and bookmarked then the bookmark ought to work too.

You could try having them ping the metaserver's address to see if they have it blocked somehow.

orpgmeta.appspot.com

Or like Sabre did in the other thread with a similar issue (possibly the same) try going to:

http://orpgmeta.appspot.com/

in a browser (cool! I didn't know the metserver was browser compliant but it makes sense ; it's all just xml afterall). Sabre thinks his problem is that he has access to the internet through a proxy server now, having just moved. Obviously unless your player has just changed their ISP that is not going to be the reason but I'll link to it as a similar problem:

Actually nothing appears in the dialog box at all. The first thing I asked him to do was access my server directly by typing in carnifex.game-host.org:6774 in the address box, but he said there is no address box to type anything into or even a box with the server list.

OK so there's some exception being thrown as the dialog is being constructed probably; might not be any issue with the metaserver. I would hope there's an error message, either (listing in order of ease of grabbing the text) in the crash-report.txt or in the DOS-box / console or in the log (the latest myfiles/runlogs/ file). If there isn't anything at all we can kick up the logging to max (through the OpenRPG menu) and try again and see what turns up in the log at that point but since max log spits out a lot of crap you'd need to grab a copy of the end of the log file just after you open the dialog that is blanked.

Perhaps its some setting that is malformed and causing Python to hiccup. If it is he can just delete his settings file and it'll make a new one (or back-up the old one to see if that works).

I think the problem was corrupted files. I had my player uninstall OpenRPG, wxPython and Python using Ccleaner. I then had him manually delete any left over files by doing a system wide search for openrpg. I then had him reboot his system and reinstall from scratch. He lost his tree, but fortunately I had a copy of his character I was able to send to him. Everything is working now.

OK then. Wow. I wonder what could have got fouled up that needed more than a re-install of OpenRPG?
