Post Crashes on Splash
To begin, no, it isn't the same 'crashes on splash' as is in the workarounds tab.
I do a completely fresh install, and am able to go to the update tab. If I go through updates, I get <urlopen error [Errno 10060] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did no properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond>

Okay, so if I close it from there and try to run the updater, it works fine, updates as normal and...crashes on splash. I reinstall and skip update. Crashes on splash. It brings up a windows error, and I (obviously) don't send the error report.

I'm running windows XP on a netbook, but it was working previously at a different location with no problems, so I don't see my machine itself being the problem. I'm not sure if that's enough information or not, but if there's anything else needed, I'll be more then happy.

Can you look for a file called crash-report.txt ?

I think windows kills the process before it can write up an error log

I don't know how to help the Gilcrease 1.8.0 release as much as I've tried. It's under supported .. people think it is the 'Standard' for which OpenRPG is but that is a fallacy. DJ is placing all of the updated files on a remote server, that is why the updater is for 1.8.0 is what it is ... also the Updater DJ crafted is BSD licensed.

I've never been fond of the changes Gilcrease and his team have made to OpenRPG, but I have tried to help when I can. I just can't anymore. The recent onslaught of problems related to new users even installing OpenRPG has really turned me off.

The only support options I can give are:
1. Un install Python an wx.Python and try the Traipse fork (link in my signature)
2. Talk to David about the Gilcrease 1.8.0. release. David works with DJ and so should know how to fix whatever problem you are having.

I agree that the updater systems for 1.8.0 and Traipse are completely different, but my impression is this is not an updater issue, although in addition to the main crash there was at least initially another problem with the 1.8.0 updater, possibly a simple failure to connect temporarily. Even by skipping the update the error occurs:

Also an actual Windows XP crash plus (useless) message asking you if you want to send a report -- I've not seen that happen before, have you prof.ebral? This might be in the code common to both forks IMO. In fact it might be an issue with the Python itself. We have seen before corruption to the installer file although it is rare.

How are you installing OpenRPG here? From the windows installer here?
