Are all those spam posts a new thing here or is it an old bane?

I'm curious is there a smart bot that can look at a picture and extract numbers. Or are there some folks somewhere patiently creating new emails so they can keep sending forum spam for a living?

o_o

Spammers are far more cunning than to waste time creating emails for which to spam with. They create scripts that automatically generate email accounts for them. That is why they are a jumble of numbers or have a similar name with a jumble of numbers.

It's not a new thing. Spam happens on all forums. The looser the restriction for a user to go from registration to posting, the more frequent spam occurs.

Ah that makes more sense. Explains why I couldn't post immediately on spacebattles.

I have to hand it to the admins I'd go nuts if I had to manually remove all that spam.

I can only do so much when it come to restricting registration. I have emailed Chris though. His phpBB install is out of date and an update should help with the spam.

Keeping you guys informed. Chris did an update to the software which normally takes care of these things. It seems to not have worked. So, for the OpenRPG forums I am modifying what new registrations can do. First, they can't post without approval. That should really squash the amount of spam people see. We'll see.

While I do have the potential to administrate the forums globally, they are not mine. You can always contact Chris through an email to get his attention and maybe push him into limiting access for new users.
