Post Hide your OpenRPG Server's IP
With a free service from DynDNS you can mask your IP in the server meta list. It is really simple, here is how.

  • Go to http://www.dyndns.com and look for the Create Free Dynamic DNS section. You can create a domain name and then selected the extension.
  • Press Add and then follow the process to create a new account and activate your new DNS name.

This process will create the name.

To have your server listed with the name instead of the IP you will need to modify you server_ini.xml file. Look for the address="hostname/address" section and replace hostname/address with your new DNS address.

Isn't that a completely cosmetic thing?

I mean, anyone who is interested in your IP could find it out with your domainname in less than 10 seconds, only using standart OS-functions that don't even require administrator rights (i don't know for sure on MacOS, but I doubt it will be any more difficult).
After all, the domain name is nothing but a placeholder for the hard-to-remember and posibily ever changing IP-adress.

There is also a negaive side to doing this:
Your Computers's IP is suddenly availible for every Searchbot and the newest Internet-Worms. It's a very limited threat if you use a router and forwarding or Linux, but if it is the external IP of your Windows you better add a firewall yetserday.

Anyway, if you have a http-server (for the maps/miniatures), you should not foget to place a robots-text so that the google-bot don't runs across your miniture-collection/what ever else is there. If you forget that it's a little loss of bandwidth in the best chase and getting sued for making copyrighted material accessible in a (however unlikely) worst chase.

I had to think about this for some time ... because it is the internet and I wanted to watch my IP aggregate through the search engine. The fact is, your statement is entirely false at 'suddenly'.

Look for your IP here: http://www.botsvsbrowsers.com/ I bet you will find it. I also would not worry about the google-bot so much either. Servers operate on a different port to CherryPy and it's CherryPy that opens a folder to the web as a web host would. Also ... CherryPy can be short lived.
